1. THE THREE LITTLE PIGS. Autora: Raquel Méndez. Editorial OQO.
Sinopsis: The youngest little pig didn't feel like working and, to keep himself warm, he made a house of straw; the middle little pig worked a little harder and made a house of wood; the eldest worked very hard to build a house of bricks and when the wolf came and blew and blew... A traditional narrative, well known and accepted by children. Bettelheim underlines the characters' symbolism, the things they do and the final outcome as metaphors of growing and developing personality. The children learn, without being conscious of it, by identifying themselves with each of the three little pigs, learning that people grow and evolve and that growing has many advantages because the eldest little pig is the one who defeats the enemy, combining strength, intelligence and rational planning. The three animals symbolize the evolution and progress of man, from an immature state to that of who knows how to face up to conflicts intelligently, allowing the child to come up with his or her own conclusions. True to the known traditional tale, the album brings us simple and amusing images creating a visual dialogue easily seen. Helga Bansch shows once again her empathy with the youngest reader, playing with the characters' expressiveness and with the details that enrich each illustration inviting us to open the book time and time again.
2. THE LITTLE RED HEN. Autora: Pilar Martínez. Editorial Kalandraka.
Sinopsis: She found some grains of wheat, she planted them, she cut the wheat, she went to the mill, she baked the bread... But neither the dog nor the cat nor the duck helped her to do all that work, they were so idle and lazy.
3. MATILDA'S CAT. Autora: Emily Gravett. Editorial Macmillan Children's Books.
Sinopsis: Matilda's cat must like something! But what?
Climbing trees, playing with wool . . . Matilda is sure that all cats love these things, but her kitty doesn't seem very enthusiastic. Undaunted, she thinks up new ways to amuse her reluctant playmate. Tea parties? Dressing up? What about a bike ride? Or perhaps a nice book – one about dogs? As the cat goes from nonplussed to terrified, Matilda gets more and more frustrated. After all, what use is a pet if it doesn't want to play?
The relationship between Matilda and her cat is sure to strike a chord with any devoted pet owner, while the deceptively simple text and funny illustrations and satisfying, snuggly ending make this story a joy to share with even the youngest children.
Perfect for kids with a pet (whether kitten, puppy, rabbit or hamster!), for those who long for one and for cat lovers everywhere.
